What can I expect when attending my first Yoga of 12-Step Recovery meeting?
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT Y12SR MEETINGS:
I’ve never practiced yoga before. Can I still come to a Y12SR meeting?
Yes. The yoga teacher will generally ask if there is anyone new to yoga. If they do not, let them know. Once you identify yourself as a beginning student, your teacher will offer specific guidance.
Are Y12SR meetings only for members of AA?
As a 12-step based discussion and yoga practice, Y12SR is open to anyone and everyone dealing with their own addictive behavior or affected by the addictive behavior of others. This is a open and inclusive group. All A’s are welcome.
Is Y12SR a replacement for my existing recovery practice?
No. Y12SR in no way replaces 12-Step meetings, a sponsor, or any other part of a 12-Step recovery program. It is an adjunct providing another helpful tool to more fully address the physical, mental and spiritual dis-ease of addiction.
What are the “Ground Rules”?
Ground Rules are the participation guidelines read at every meeting. The purpose of the Ground Rules is to to keep the meeting safe for all attending. With that as the abiding purpose, it may be necessary from time to time for the meeting facilitator or space holder to call a ground rule break.
What if I don’t know if I am an addict, alcoholic, or affected by the dis-ease of addiction?
You are welcome to be in the inquiry of these questions as you attend a Y12SR meeting.
Do I need to have my own yoga equipment to participate?
It depends on where the Y12SR meeting is held. If the meeting is held in a yoga school, most often there will be “loaner” yoga mats available. It is always a good idea to bring your own yoga mat if you have one.
What is the cost?
Y12SR is donation-based. There is often a suggested donation and in the current market, yoga classes range from $10 – $20/class. This said, no one is ever turned away. You are more important than your money.
What happens to the donation money given from members?
The model for Y12SR is win-win-win. Our leaders are asked to split the donations from each meeting. One-third goes to the teacher, one-third goes to the host facility, and one-third goes to a local nonprofit organization that serves those affected by the dis-ease of addiction.
How long are Y12SR meetings?
Meetings can last anywhere from one to two hours. Check the info for the meeting in your area. What kind of clothing should I wear to practice yoga? Please wear clothing in which you can bend and stretch in both physical and mental comfort
